Coleman and Valene Connor are two adult brothers who have just buried their father. Coleman shot him in the face \u2014 an accident, of course. The two carry on as before: getting drunk, cheating, and fighting, all while annoying the sorrowful priest Welsh. He visits regularly, ostensibly to guide the two back onto the righteous path of forgiveness and gentleness, but really to drink their liquor \u2014 and to make himself look good in the eyes of God and his own congregation. The young Girleen sells the booze that drives the spiral of hate, love, and violence ever deeper, past suicides, microwaves, and statues of saints, toward the confession of sins that no one can forgive. <\/p>\n
