The computer mousepad – a flat piece of plastic, once indispensable, now almost forgotten. For decades, it served as the interface between human and machine. Today, it appears as a relic of that analog touch that preceded the digital world. The classic mousepad is made of EVA foam, which is also very popular as a costume material in LARP and cosplay.
Sculptor Sonja Prochorow transforms this cult object into wearable sculptures. From a collection of hundreds of mousepads she created costumes and props for nine fictional characters – infused with pop-cultural references from the 1980s through the 2000s.
The mousepads used come from precisely this period: an era in which digital technology first made its way into everyday life and the computer was seen as the promise of a bright future. Prochorow places three of the resulting characters in the setting of the karaoke bar “Singvogel.” Visitors have the opportunity to sing karaoke.
