What power can joy unleash in a world that is full of crises and uncertainty? For the Brazilian choreographer Ana Pi, joy is not a harmless emotion, but a practice of alertness, a means of creating communities and testing new plans for the future.

In her new work “Atomic Joy”, she joins forces with eight young dancers from the Paris region whose dance practice is based on street and club styles to devise a pulsating stage space filled with the energy of dance battles. Gestures circulate through the group, being picked up, transformed and passed on, and the result is a choreography that tells of connections and collective movement.

Its starting points are the dance practices of the transatlantic African diaspora, in which knowledge, memory and resistance are carried within the body across generations. To music specially created for this piece by composer Christophe Chassol a multi-faceted movement vocabulary emerges, combining technical precision with playful improvisation. “Atomic Joy” is a thrilling celebration of communal dancing and an ode to joy as a political and social power.
