The solo “Inanna” is based on the hymns of poet Enheduanna, who lived and wrote in the Sumerian city Ur about 2334-2279 BC. In her poems Enheduanna is fantasizing about the goddess of war and love, Inanna, creating a confusing mixture of death and sensuality, as Inanna is described as beautiful as a ripe fruit in one poem and as feeding on corpses like a dog in the next.
These contradictions, combined with the current ongoing conflicts in i. e. Iran, Ukraine and Palestine, let to Verena Götsch’s questioning on why we still reproduce images that romanticize, glorify and sexualize war. In “Inanna”, these contradictions are turned into dance and embodied with the strong wish for healing and caring.
Biography
Verena Götsch is a Gießen based dance and performance artist studying at the MA program for Choreography and Performance. Her background in dance is strongly based in butoh and somatics, from where she has expanded to contemporary dance. In her works she is freely mixing these practices. She regularly practices contact improvisation, has a long work history as an art model and loves raves.
At the moment, she is dancing with the concepts of softening, sensuality, ritual and bodily knowledge. Her favorite tools are improvisation, TRE and touch explorations. The focus of her work and methods is sensitizing to the environment and sensations, especially the tactile sense.
