What's Love Got to Do with It
3 Pieces on Love
by the directing department of HfMDK
Das zwischen uns
Deniz Özbay (*1996) takes on different forms of silence within a romantic relationship. Remaining silent as an expression of closeness, as a safe space, but also as a strategy to avoid conflict. Out of an intimacy that does not need words, a destructive dynamic arises, until the figures, without knowing exactly how and why, find their love in shatters.
Der Bär
Veronika Artibilova (*2002) stages a classic with “The Bear,” based on Chekhov’s play. When the hot-headed Smirnov, a retired adjutant general, intrudes upon the dubious mourning of the widow Popova to demand payment of her late husband’s old debts, he instantly arouses the young woman’s anger — but also her spirits. Under the watchful eye of the servant Luca, the argument escalates into a challenge to a duel. But is there perhaps more to their animosity than first met the eye?
But Daddy I Love Him!
Julia Chaplygienaa (*2003) investigates in "But Daddy, I Love Him" online fan forums as spaces of collectively coping with trauma. Be it on TikTok, Tumblr or Archive of Our Own: In the safe anonymity of screennames, behind the façade of a fictional figure, in a world, that is not ones own, we oftentimes share more about ourselves than we would with our closest friends.
